This past spring I discovered the Community Center Shanghai after having lived here for about 1 ½ years. I wish I had come by sooner! The staff is friendly and helpful; going out of their way to answer questions and offer helpful information.

I was encouraged to volunteer if interested, and after describing some of the many opportunities I chose to help with the weekly English Conversation Club. On these Monday mornings I met people from many different countries. During discussions, where English is practiced I learned about various European, South American, Asian and Eastern European cultures.

I now see that, even after living in Shanghai for a while, there are many things I don’t know about, and many places I haven’t been! The Shanghai Community Center offers a safe, friendly place to gather all kinds of information. The staff is open to new ideas and look for new ways to reach and engage the community. It is a great place for new and not-so-new ex pats to meet, learn and engage in a wide variety of activities and classes. I plan to go there often in the future.

When I first arrived in Shanghai 2.5 years ago, one of the first places I sought out was the Community Center Puxi. Among my many plans for my time in Shanghai, was to be involved in community activities, and use my free time to support a worthwhile cause. After talking to the charismatic director at my children’s school orientation, I liked the sound of the CSS programmes and so, went along.

The people were friendly and welcoming, appreciative of any contribution to their organization, and offered many interesting programmes. Through the CCS I have learnt Chinese, attended job seminars, met many interesting people, and helped out with promoting their programmes via e-newsletter. I have had support and encouragement in my various projects and continue to value their contribution to the life of Shanghai expatriates and the possibilities they create for meeting local people and communities.
