ASSISTANCE
After the overwhelming success of the Fugong Shipment (see report below and related pics on flickr), we are aiming at sending November Shipment to Kashgar, Xinjiang.
We estimate that we will sort and ship a large quantity of goods accumulated for the past 5 months.
As usual, we appreciate financial donations to assist us in covering the transport costs for the shipment or buy a thing or two at ROH bazaar.

November 2011

Dear Friends of ROH, Sponsors and Volunteers,

River of Hearts concluded its last Sorting Party and Clothing Drive for 2011on November5th. We are glad to report that it turned out to be a great event. Thanks to you all!!!

Given the amount of clothing donations received over the past months, we awoke on Saturday morning knowing that ahead of us lay a very big challenge. Our own estimate was that we were going to sort between 450 and 500 boxes. However, it became clear that our estimates would be exceeded. It had been more than five months since our last Sorting Party on May 28th, and in addition to the regular donations at the different drop off locations, companies and schools like Cisco and Yew Chung International School took the initiative to mobilize their employees and brought their own clothing drive donations directly to the school.

As you can imagine, organizing an event of this nature requires careful planning. It actually all started on Friday November 4th when the four Santa Fe trucks collected from each of the drop off locations in Puxi and Pudong and brought the goods to Shanghai United International School where 50 students with their teachers and parents were anxiously waiting to unload the boxes, bags, suitcases and other large items.

It is with deep gratitude that we thank all of you for taking part in this important and memorable event. The ROH November 2011 Sorting Party counted with over 250 volunteers coming from all walks of life to ship a total of 593 bags and boxes of clothing, shoes, toys and miscellaneous items (weight 9.5ton) to Kashgar in the Uyghur  province of Xinjiang. 3 boxes were sent to Guizhou by the Shang, hai Hiking Group.

We want to extend a BIG THANK YOU to the following organizations and people for helping ROH:

1. Our host: Shanghai United International School. A big thanks to their 50 students for not only helping to unload the trucks on Friday but for also working hard on Saturday as well. SUIS teachers and administrative staff were all extremely dedicated and helpful, making us feel very welcomed to their school. It was truly a team effort. They served sandwiches on Friday, coffee and cookies on Saturday. Thanks to Alan Lim our School Liaison.

2. The Truck Company XINJIE : who donated free transport to Urumqi, cutting our cost in half and making it possible to send so far to a needy area of China.

3. Our Food Sponsors:
- Mexico Lindo: served 100 delicious tacos… (in spite of the rain!)
- Melrose Pizza: sponsored the event with 25 large pizzas, well appreciated by all
- Blue Frog: offered 80 hot dogs

- The Shanghai Hiking Group organized its own collection and bought food for 100 volunteers
- Michelle’s Ayi: who (for the 3rd time) cooked delicious Chinese food, feeding over 30.
- Dxcel: Donated 6 cartons of premium imported juices from Israel and 10 cartons of  water from Switzerland

4. Companies and Organizations
- The Hiking Group with Inger who sent 60 well organized volunteers and were much missed after they left!
- Cisco with their 40 dedicated volunteers.
- Projects Abroad Association participated by sending about 15 strong and dynamic young people. They worked hard at loading the truck and showed their dedication and commitment to make a difference in China once again.
- Metro Town represented by about 10 hard workers.
- Morgan Stanley joined the Sorting Party again with their competent and capable team. Your contribution to the work of ROH remains invaluable.
- The different schools who sent their students: SCIS, SMIC, BISS, SAS, etc.

5. Those responsible for the various tasks of the day:

Lunch: Michelle and Cat __________
Sowing and Loading: Bud and team
Packing: Michelle, Chin and team
Truck organizers: Cat, Murphy, John Fan and Catherine from CCS
ROH bazaar: Christine Koh, Catherine from CCS and team

6. All volunteers:
Whether you came for the morning, the afternoon or stayed the whole day, your willingness to let go of your personal time to join ROH is thoroughly appreciated.

7. ROH Drop Off Locations who throughout the year offer their home and facilities to receive ROH donations.

We invite you to check the following website as we upload pics of the party in the next few weeks. Should you have photos you would like to share with others, please send them to rohshanghai@gmail.com and we will upload these on the website as well.

We hope to continue working with all of you on this project. ROH is always looking for new drop-off locations, sponsors and willing volunteers. Write to us with your proposal and ideas.

Best regards,
Marguerite for the ROH Team

What We Do

River of Hearts (ROH), established in 2003, is an outreach program of the Community Center Shanghai. ROH provides internationals living and working in Shanghai, with the opportunity to graciously give items they no longer need to those who do by donating new and quality used clothing apparel and accessories to designated drop-off locations.

Three times a year, ROH gathers all donations, organizes large "sorting parties" hosted by international schools alternating between Puxi and Pudong, and invites volunteers to participate in a day of sorting and community, while enjoying a sponsored lunch. At these sorting parties the donations are organized, bagged and loaded for transport to rural areas within China, both near and far. For more information on how you can get involved, please visit us online at http://www.communitycenter.cn/Outreach_CCS_RiverOfHeart.asp.

Our Mission

To provide a way for people to donate clothing, shoes, bedding, toys and other items in good condition to people in need. Community Center Shanghai works with various charities and governmental organizations to deliver donated items to persons and communities in need.
