THANK YOU
Dear Volunteers, friends and sponsors
River of Hearts concluded its last Sorting Party/Clothing Drive for 2009. We are glad to report that it was a wonderful event.
Given the amount of clothing donations received over the past months, we awoke on Saturday morning knowing that, ahead of us lay a very big challenge. Our own estimate was that we were going to sort between 450 and 500 boxes. However, it became clear early on that our estimates would be exceeded. It was nearly five months since our last Sorting Party on June 6th. During this time we received donations coming from all quarters in Shanghai i.e. families, single persons, company employees and school students.
In addition, companies like Fluor and the Mexican Chamber took the initiative to mobilize their residents and international schools like Yew Chung also took it upon themselves to spread the word among the students encouraging everyone to donate clothing. As you can imagine, organizing an event of this nature requires careful planning. The day before the Sorting party, goods had to be collected from 9 different locations (Puxi and Pudong) and the trucks had to find their way to the sorting venue having to deal with the challenging Shanghai traffic.
It is with great thanks and gratitude that we would like to thank all of you for being part of this wonderful event. We managed to send a total of 505 bags of clothing and 94 boxes of shoes, toys and miscellaneous to the
Handicap Association in Anhui Province. We also were able to give bags to different associations like the
young bakers ( a group of teenaged orphans), 10 bags to an
orphanage in Shanxi, a group from Morgan Stanley send 11 bags to
Yunnan, a few bags to the
Renewal center ( for migrant workers in Puxi) and some also to some
migrant students. We had about
200 volunteers coming from all walks of life.
Once more, we want to extend a

What We Do
River of Hearts is a charity program of Community Center Shanghai. We collect items at various drop-off locations around Shanghai and re-distribute them to people in need throughout China.
Our Mission
To provide a way for people to donate clothing, shoes, bedding, toys and other items in good condition to people in need. Community Center Shanghai works with various charities and governmental organizations to deliver donated items to persons and communities in need.
History
2007: Shipped 301 boxes of clothes, shoes, bedding, bags, and toys to Yunnan Province. Shipped 422 boxes of clothing to Qinghai Province. Shipped 616 boxes of clothing to Shanxi Province.
Total boxes shipped to-date to needy Chinese people: 4237+ boxes of clothing and 100 sleeping bags and 44 tents.
After its first shipment in 2007, River of Hearts received a report that said,
"Your shipment of clothes, shoes, bedding, bags, and toys arrived yesterday. 36 volunteers lined up in a narrow street to transport over 300 boxes to the office. Spectators on the street watched us unload and commented on this good work - knowing it was going to benefit the upper mountain villages.
At this time, we have staff hiking to distant villages to evaluate their needs. I hope to send 20% of the goods further up the valley to Gong Shan and on the way, train a few volunteers to survey villages and help distribute clothes. While assessing needs on a case-by-case basis requires significant time and effort, it ensures we are as effective as possible in assisting those in real need.
We appreciate your efforts in collecting all the items and boxing them up - they arrived in excellent condition. And for covering the cost of the transportation, we realize it was not a small amount.
Many heartfelt thanks to River of Hearts and all their volunteers for making this delivery so successful."

• Offer your vehicle to pick up donations
Donations:
- • Clothing
• Shoes
• Bed linens and blankets
• Normal-sized toys
• Cash - to help defray the transportation expenses of getting these items out to the countryside
We ask that donated items should be clean (please launder before donating) and in good condition. If there are special items you wish to donate, please call before delivering.
